Flow - Training Course

 Kursus

Introduction
Flow measurement is essential in the daily processing or operating in many industries such as the oil, power, chemical, food, water, and waste treatment industries. The quantity to be determined may be volume flow rate, mass flow rate and flow velocity or other quantities derived from these. This three-day course covers the measurement of flow, a detailed up-to-date overview of fundamentals and practice of liquid flow metering and calibration. The emphasis is to ensure that you can apply the techniques and knowledge at your own workplace.

Who should attend?
The course is relevant to personnel who use or check flow meters as a part of laboratory testing, plant installation, or monitoring and maintenance tasks. The course is designed to provide value for senior technicians, engineers and technical staff from a wide range of industries, calibration and testing laboratories involved in laboratory accreditation and establishing measurement traceability under an ISO quality system. The course is suitable for participants with or without previous measuring experience. The course curriculum is applicable to both calibration and manufacturing processes.

A basic level of algebra, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics is helpful and participants should be acquainted with GUM uncertainty analysis.

Course content
The course curriculum is based on Danish Technological Institute's more than 100 years of experience in designing test setups, calibration in various fields, verification and as a leading partner in industrial development for Danish and international companies. Besides being the National Primary Laboratory for Liquid Flow in Denmark since 1997 this experience includes measurement of temperature, pressure, mass and force among others as well as operation of data acquisition systems.

The course covers the use and practical and theoretical aspects of flow measurements and gives a thorough overview of the variety of technologies used in flow meters. The curriculum also includes calibration and maintenance, methods and guidelines for designing calibrations and measurements that you can use at your workplace immediately. The course is designed to be highly interactive to enable you to benefit from the experience of the other participants and the presenters. There will be a number of hands-on exercises, theoretical examples and exercises during the course and time is also included to give the participants an opportunity to discuss specific problems. Furthermore, the course includes a visit to a manufacturer of flow meters.

The course includes an exam, a certificate of participation and a certificate of the exam result.

Objectives
After the course you will have obtained:
- A detailed understanding of the flow meter operating principles.
- An overview of physical principles and treatment of uncertainties.
- The practical knowledge in order to choose the right equipment for liquid metering, proving and sampling and be able to resolve any problems in relation to uncertainty and inaccuracy of flow meter readings.
- The insight needed to identify various sources of error that affect flow measurements and tips and tricks for recognising the problems.
- Knowledge about installation, periodic maintenance and calibration techniques.
- Skills necessary to operate and configure a flow meter.

A comprehensive booklet on the curriculum is included in the course fee.

Furthermore you will have learned about:
- Basic measurement concepts
- Why measurements sometimes do not work
- Measurement design
- Making measurements traceable
- Principles of calibration
- Assessing the uncertainty in measurements

Why participate?
Development, installation, calibration, measuring and maintenance of a flow meter involve a variety of disciplines. This includes the flow sensor, the sensor-fluid interactions, the transducers and their associated signal processing units and the assessment of the overall system and its uncertainty under ideal, disturbed, harsh or potentially explosive conditions in both the laboratory and the field.

The primary aim of this course is to provide sufficient information on the above topics to enable users to choose the equipment and methods meeting their needs and to provide a firm platform assuring that installation and use of flow devices is performed correctly. All concepts in the course are treated in a practical and pragmatic way ensuring direct knowledge to value.
