I can assure you it is not. In the face of that young student who sleeps just three hours before working the night shift, I think about my mom, who raised my sister and me on her own while she worked and earned her degree; who once turned to food stamps but was still able to send us to the best schools in the country with the help of student loans and scholarships. So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, and who promote conflict rather than the cooperation that can help all of our people achieve justice and prosperity. I know there is debate about this issue.

The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect. These needs will be met only if we act boldly in the years ahead; and if we understand that the challenges we face are shared, and our failure to meet them will hurt us all. America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own. troops and civilians. And we will match promising Muslim students with internships in America; invest in on-line learning for teachers and children around the world; and create a new online network, so a teenager in Kansas can communicate instantly with a teenager in Cairo. It's a belief that pulsed in the cradle of civilization, and that still beats in the heart of billions.

I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. This too is part of America's promise - the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort. That together, our dreams can be one.
 
Because one of the things that we have to change in our politics is the idea that people cannot disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism. But it is clear to all concerned that when it comes to nuclear weapons, we have reached a decisive point.
